1 Year

Today is officially my one year anniversary of switching to Brown Fox Calligraphy full time! As most of you know, I spent the previous 5 years as a Civil Engineer designing roads and highways, so this was quite a 180 for me.

Now that I've gotten to spend all of my time devoted to Brown Fox, I could not imagine doing anything else, and I think that's a great indication that I made the right choice last August. It was a very difficult one for me, having studied engineering in college and working hard to become a Professional Engineer in the last couple of years. It was not a decision I took lightly or came to quickly. There was a lot of heartache and struggle during that period of time figuring out if I wanted to make the leap to pursue my passion. Even though I believe this is what I meant to do and it makes me happier than anything I've ever done, I felt a huge part of me was being left behind. Being okay with this was a process, and I am happy to say that I love where I am now, and have many aspirations for Brown Fox and my new skillset.

Naturally, I had to learn many new things that come with running your own business. I had to be owner, employee, marketing division, accounting group, and many more roles I wasn't necessarily prepared for. One piece of advice I have for those of you interested in having your own business -- hire people whose jobs it is to be experts in those fields, if you feel time spent on those aspects of your business are taking away from the places you excel. Finances are not something I am great at, and after spending hours researching taxes and setting up IRA accounts, I realized I needed an accountant. Now I have the most wonderful accountant helping Brown Fox, and it was one of the best decisions I have made in the last year. It frees up my time so I can spend more of it creating. My next goal is to work with experts in marketing to help my business get to the level of exposure I am seeking. Don't be afraid to ask for help from the talented people in your life, and don't feel like you have to do everything on your own!

I feel lucky every day to have found work that fulfills my passion and pays the bills, and I do not take it for granted because I know it's something that a lot of people never achieve. I would not have gotten to this place without the incredible, unrelenting support of my friends, family, and boyfriend. It truly takes a community to help you achieve your dreams, so surround yourself with people who believe in you!

Thank you to each and every one of you who has supported my business directly and indirectly. I would absolutely love to hear about your dreams, and if I can ever offer and advice or help in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
