By far, my favorite thing about being in the wedding industry is meeting other incredible vendors who are following their passions, and bringing their amazing skills to such a happy and welcoming space. A college classmate of mine has been working hard achieving her dance goals since graduation, and I am ecstatic for her to be launching her own dance business helping couples look stunning (and coordinated!) on their big day.
I caught up with Courtney to learn more about her business, and to encourage all of you newly engaged couples in the NY area to check her out for choreographing your wedding dance!
How did you start your business?
My friends asked me to choreograph their wedding dances after I created a three-part piece that told the story of a couple who fell in love at first sight, fell apart, and then came back together. I have always loved using dance to express life's greatest emotions and found that my choreography, heavily influenced by ballroom, naturally gravitated towards stories of romance. Choreographing for my friends was an absolute joy and soon other guests at their weddings began to ask me to choreograph for their friends and family.
What do you love about the services you offer?
Engaged couples and newlyweds share a very special kind of love. They have gathered all their hope, trust, and courage to bring them to one of the most important moment of their lives. These intense emotions are normally shared between a couple in private, but a wedding is the opportunity to celebrate this love with family and friends. I work with each couple to create a dance that is unique to both their relationship and the atmosphere of the wedding. Some couples want a romantic spin, some love a touch of comedy, some perform a full-blown musical, and others envision a simple dance where they can hold each other for the first time as husband and wife. My favorite part of the process is blending all these elements into a dance that highlights the couple's unique movement quality, captures their personalities, and expresses the love that they share.
What does the investment look like?
Many ballroom studios offer wedding packages that include a certain amount of classes and rehearsals to prep. The price depends on how many hours the couple predicts they need to perfect their dance. I work a bit differently and provide packages based on the length and complexity of the dances rather than by the hour. I have found the process is much less stressful (and thus more fun!) when we have an ample amount of rehearsal time to make sure the couple feels confident and comfortable walking onto the dance floor for that special moment. Thank you, Courtney, for sharing your passion and I cannot wait to see videos of the dances you are working on!
